Modi Government’s Citizenship Act.
The Modi government made a lot of noise about the Citizenship Act, but now its ground reality is coming out to be something else. Currently, about one hundred and eighty Hindu refugee families who reached Delhi from Pakistan are struggling to get citizenship, which exposes the Modi government’s claims of being the protector of Hindus.
Struggles of Hindu Refugees.
Hindu refugees from Pakistan are still struggling for their citizenship. These one hundred and eighty families, who came to Delhi from Pakistan, are forced to live in slums and under the sheds of huts. They have made Majnu ka Tila of Delhi their abode. However, their situation remains precarious.
Threat of Homelessness.
Now the sword of homelessness is hanging over these families. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has issued a notice to demolish these slums. The refugees question where they will go if they do not get a place to live here either. More than 150 families living here say they came to India from Pakistan ten years ago because they were being harassed there and felt unsafe. Now, they feel they are being harassed here as well.
Legal Intervention.
However, there is a silver lining. The High Court has stayed the DDA notice, providing temporary relief to these families.
Conclusion.
The Citizenship Act, which was supposed to protect and provide a better life for Hindu refugees, seems to have failed to deliver on its promises. The plight of these families highlights the gap between the government’s rhetoric and the actual implementation of the law. It remains to be seen how the government will address these issues and provide a lasting solution for the refugees.
