Hamas Announces Ismail Haniyya’s Death in Tehran.

Hamas has announced that its top leader, Ismail Haniyya, has been killed in Iran’s capital, Tehran. On Wednesday, Hamas issued a statement claiming that Israel attacked the place where Haniyya was staying, resulting in his death. There has been no official response from Israel regarding this claim. According to Hamas, Haniyya was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new President, Masood Pej. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has confirmed the death of one of Haniyya’s security personnel along with him, stating that an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the details.

There has been no response from Israel yet in this regard. The lack of comment from Israeli authorities leaves questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the IRGC, along with Haniyya, one of his security personnel has also been killed. The IRGC has stated that they are still investigating the situation to determine the full extent of the incident. The death of Haniyya has also been confirmed by Iran’s government media.

Ismail Haniyya was a prominent figure in Hamas, having served as the head of the organization’s political bureau. He was previously the Prime Minister of the tenth government of the Palestinian Authority. Haniyya, known by his kunya Abu Abed, was born in a Palestinian refugee camp and spent three years imprisoned by Israel in 1989. After his release, he returned to Gaza and was appointed head of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin’s office, the spiritual leader of Hamas, in 1997. This position significantly raised his profile within the organization.

Haniyya’s Dismissal and Ongoing Role.

Haniyya was appointed Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority on February 16, 2006, and reappointed on February 20 of the same year. However, Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian National Authority, dismissed him from his post. This dismissal followed Hamas’s takeover of the Gaza Strip and the expulsion of representatives from Abbas’s Fatah movement, resulting in a week of fighting. Haniyya rejected the dismissal, asserting that his government would continue to fulfill its responsibilities to the Palestinian people. He was elected head of Hamas’s political bureau in 2017 and was declared a terrorist by the U.S. State Department in 2018.
